Extractions

Although our team will do everything that we can to help you maintain your healthy smile, sometimes a tooth extraction may be recommended as the best option in preserving your overall oral health. Tooth extractions become necessary for many reasons including:

  • Severe decay or damage
  • Baby teeth that don’t naturally fall out
  • Teeth that don’t fully erupt
  • Preparation for orthodontic treatment or other dental work
  • Wisdom teeth

If we recommend a tooth extraction, it will benefit your smile in ways such as preventing the spread of infection or relieving pain and crowding.

Types of Tooth Extractions

Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Many times, wisdom teeth cannot grow in properly due to limited space in the mouth. Many people don’t have the room necessary in their jawbone to allow the wisdom teeth to grow in without causing problems. If this is the case, one or more wisdom teeth may need to be removed. Typically, wisdom teeth begin to come in between the ages of 17-21.

Multiple Tooth Extractions

Reasons such as injury or extreme decay may call for the extraction of multiple teeth at the same time. If this becomes necessary, we will provide a recommended treatment plan for replacing your missing teeth. With orthodontic treatment, sometimes more than one tooth may need to be extracted to create room for your remaining teeth.

Extraction Site Preservation

Following some extractions, dental implants may be recommended to replace your missing tooth. However, many times a patient’s jawbone may be weak from the recent extraction and unable to support an implant. Extraction site preservation allows us to use grafting material to fortify the bone and preserve the area that was affected by the extraction.

Post-Operative Care

Depending on your extraction, detailed instructions will be given for post-operative care. Most often, the following is recommended:

  • Bite down gently on gauze to reduce bleeding where the tooth was extracted.
  • Eat soft foods and chew on the side opposite of your tooth extraction.
  • Rest for a minimum of 2 days.
  • Take recommended pain medication.
  • Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
  • Avoid using a drinking straw for the first full day.
  • Brush around the area where the tooth was extracted, avoiding the affected area.

Dr. Moriarty suggested IV sedation and Gretchen agreed that this was her best option. She couldn’t believe how easy the appointments were and wished she would have started the process sooner.

Pamela had beautiful porcelain crowns done years ago and has been very diligent about keeping her smile healthy. Surprisingly, she began having issues with her crown, it was loose and caused an unpleasant taste in her mouth. After a consultation, it was determined that the root of the tooth could not be saved. Pamela was given three options to replace her front tooth and she choose an implant. The root was removed and the implant was placed the same day. After a few months of healing the final restoration was completed. The results were outstanding. Pamela is positive she made the right choice to replace her tooth with an implant.
