Root Canals

A toothache that is lingering may be a sign of a needed root canal. Another symptom can be continued tooth sensitivity to cold and hot. Root canal therapy may sound intimidating, but it can be the best thing for saving your tooth from extraction!

A root canal becomes necessary when infection has spread to the pulp of a tooth. There are two layers that protect this from happening – the enamel and dentin. These layers often prevent a root canal from becoming necessary by encasing the pulp of the tooth and keeping out infection. However, when the infection becomes severe, it can spread to the pulp of a tooth. When this happens, a root canal becomes necessary to save the tooth from extraction.

Symptoms that a root canal may be necessary can include:

  • Tooth pain
  • Gum swelling near the tooth
  • Facial swelling on the side of the face
  • Swollen neck glands
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold
  • Bad breath
  • A foul taste in mouth
  • Fever

What to Expect During a Root Canal Procedure

To help you feel relaxed and at ease throughout a root canal, we offer sedation dentistry to give our patients an added level of comfort. Sedation isn’t required, but it is available for patients who dread sitting in the dental chair for extended periods of time. Sedation dentistry can allow you to receive treatment without feeling anxious or uncomfortable.

Once the area is numbed and you are ready for treatment, your dentist will carefully remove all areas of infection. Once all infection is removed, the tooth will be filled and sealed. A temporary crown will then be placed to protect the tooth.

You may experience some soreness in the root canal area following treatment. Over-the-counter pain medication may be taken to treat any discomfort. An antibiotic may also be recommended to help with any concerns of lingering infection. A few weeks following your root canal, an appointment will be made for a permanent crown to be placed. This will allow you to use your tooth without pain or discomfort.

If you are in need of a root canal in Lititz, PA, call our office today to set up a consultation. Our team will work to give you the care that you need to preserve your smile and protect your teeth!

Dr. Moriarty suggested IV sedation and Gretchen agreed that this was her best option. She couldn’t believe how easy the appointments were and wished she would have started the process sooner.

Meet Pamela

Pamela had beautiful porcelain crowns done years ago and has been very diligent about keeping her smile healthy. Surprisingly, she began having issues with her crown, it was loose and caused an unpleasant taste in her mouth. After a consultation, it was determined that the root of the tooth could not be saved. Pamela was given three options to replace her front tooth and she choose an implant. The root was removed and the implant was placed the same day. After a few months of healing the final restoration was completed. The results were outstanding. Pamela is positive she made the right choice to replace her tooth with an implant.
